I think one of the people involved may have a history of "schisms." I think someone at one of these companies was also the genius behind Garritan's "Stradivari Violin" and "Gofriller Cello" which, many years ago, were the first of these really detailed modelled/scripted instruments. So at some point way back when they were related technologies but that might not be true for the newer products. I believe there was a schism that has now turned into these two separate companies Audiomodeling and Samplemodeling. I think the company AudioModeling (SWAM) is a spinoff of SampleModeling but I'm not certain. The SWAM instruments are newer by several years, so there's probably plenty I'm missing. To my ears, the SampleModeling brass instruments sound better than the SWAM demos, but I have never played the SWAM instruments myself. I own the brass instruments from SampleModeling, which are excellent and very similar in capability/approach. In other words, I prefer the overall sound of traditional solo string sample libraries, but I prefer the little human nuances and details that the SWAM strings can evoke. In my experience, the strings can be more lifelike than traditional sample libraries, but less realistic sounding, if that makes sense.

I haven't really done much with the strings. I get great results with a Roland Aerophone. If you tweak a wind controller just right, you can get an amazingly lifelike sound with very little post-editing needed. You can get very good results with only 2-3 controllers (dynamics, vibrato, vibrato rate), but you can get super-detailed if you want to dive into the other controllers. I think it depends a lot on musical context and how I'm busing/routing/compressing/reverb-ing everything in my project. When it comes to using them as your primary woodwind instruments in an orchestra made up of more traditional sample libraries, I've had mixed luck - sometimes they sit perfectly in the mix, and sometimes they don't blend well. These excel at solo passages where you want to hear the idiomatic and human details of performance. I bought the bundle a few years back and they're incredible.
